Betti number
Summary
The -th Betti number of a topological space is the rank of its -th integral singular homology group. Informally, counts the path components, counts independent loops that do not bound, and counts enclosed cavities. Betti numbers are homotopy invariants, and their alternating sum is the Euler characteristic.
