Betweenness

Builds on Affine spaceOrdered field

Definition

Let FF be an ordered field, let VV be a vector space over FF, and let PP be an affine space over VV. Let x,y,z∈Px, y, z \in P. The point yy is weakly between xx and zz if y=x+t(z−x)y = x + t(z - x) for some t∈Ft \in F with 0≤t≤10 \le t \le 1. The point yy is strictly between xx and zz if it is weakly between them and y≠xy \ne x and y≠zy \ne z.

Remarks

Example: in ℝ2\R^2, the point (1,1)(1, 1) is strictly between (0,0)(0, 0) and (2,2)(2, 2), with t=1/2t = 1/2. Non-example: (3,3)(3, 3) is on the line through (0,0)(0, 0) and (2,2)(2, 2), but it is not between them, since it needs t=3/2>1t = 3/2 > 1. Weak betweenness is symmetric: if yy is weakly between xx and zz, then it is weakly between zz and xx, with 1−t1 - t in place of tt. The set of points weakly between xx and zz is the closed segment [x,z][x, z]. In axiomatic geometry, betweenness is not defined but taken as a primitive relation that satisfies the axioms of order.

Each page uses the pages above it. The colour of the bar on a box shows how strong the evidence is, and the box also gives it as text. The list has the same pages.

What this page needs for W1

  • an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)
  • a source with a locator (0 of 1)

The writing levels say how complete the text of a page is. They do not measure its truth.
