Definition
Let be a field. A bialgebra over is a vector space over with linear maps , , and such that:
- is an associative algebra with multiplication and unit .
- is a coalgebra.
- and are algebra homomorphisms, where has the product .
Remarks
Clause 3 means , , and . It is equivalent to asking that and be coalgebra homomorphisms. Example: the group algebra of a group , with and for . The check of clause 3 on the basis: and . Non-example: on , the coalgebra with and fails clause 3. Indeed , while , and in every field. With instead, is a bialgebra.
