Definition

Let XX be a normed vector space over 𝕂=ℝ\mathbb{K} = \R or β„‚\C, and let Xβˆ—X^* be its continuous dual space with the operator norm. The bidual of XX is the Banach space Xβˆ—βˆ—=(Xβˆ—)βˆ—X^{**} = (X^*)^*. The canonical embedding is the map J ⁣:Xβ†’Xβˆ—βˆ—J \colon X \to X^{**} given by (Jx)(f)=f(x)forΒ x∈XΒ andΒ f∈Xβˆ—.(Jx)(f) = f(x) \quad \text{for } x \in X \text{ and } f \in X^*.

Remarks

For each xx, the map JxJx is linear on Xβˆ—X^* and ∣(Jx)(f)βˆ£β‰€βˆ₯fβˆ₯ βˆ₯xβˆ₯\abs{(Jx)(f)} \le \norm{f}\,\norm{x}, so Jx∈Xβˆ—βˆ—Jx \in X^{**} with βˆ₯Jxβˆ₯≀βˆ₯xβˆ₯\norm{Jx} \le \norm{x}. The Hahn–Banach theorem gives ff with βˆ₯fβˆ₯=1\norm{f} = 1 and f(x)=βˆ₯xβˆ₯f(x) = \norm{x}, so in fact JJ is a linear isometry. Example: for X=𝕂nX = \mathbb{K}^n with any norm, JJ is an isometric isomorphism onto Xβˆ—βˆ—X^{**}, because dim⁑Xβˆ—βˆ—=dim⁑X\dim X^{**} = \dim X; compare the double dual in linear algebra. Example: for X=c0X = c_0 one has Xβˆ—=β„“1X^* = \ell^1 and Xβˆ—βˆ—=β„“βˆžX^{**} = \ell^\infty, and JJ is the inclusion of c0c_0 in β„“βˆž\ell^\infty, which is not onto. Non-example: the algebraic double dual, the space of all linear forms on Xβˆ—X^*, is in general larger than Xβˆ—βˆ—X^{**}, because it does not require continuity. The image J(X)J(X) is closed in Xβˆ—βˆ—X^{**} exactly when XX is complete; in general the closure of J(X)J(X) is a completion of XX.

  • an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)
  • a source with a locator (0 of 1)

The writing levels say how complete the text of a page is. They do not measure its truth.
