Definition
Let , let be an open interval, and let , , be a family of maps such that is continuous. A parameter is a bifurcation value of the family if the following holds. Every open interval contains some such that is not topologically conjugate to . One then says that the family, or the difference equation , undergoes a bifurcation at .
Remarks
Example: for on with , the value is a bifurcation value. The map is the identity, so every point is fixed, while for the only fixed point is . A conjugacy maps fixed points bijectively to fixed points, so is not conjugate to .
Non-example: in the same family, is not a bifurcation value. For the homeomorphism satisfies , so all with are conjugate to each other.
Many texts use a local version, in which only the behaviour near a fixed point or a periodic orbit is compared. A local bifurcation of a fixed point of a smooth family can only occur when an eigenvalue of lies on the unit circle. For one-dimensional maps this means or .
