Definition

Let ψ\psi and ψ~\tilde\psi be functions in the Lp space L2(ℝ)L^2(\R). For j,k∈ℤj, k \in \Z put ψj,k(x)=2j/2ψ(2jx−k)\psi_{j,k}(x) = 2^{j/2}\psi(2^j x - k) and ψ~j,k(x)=2j/2ψ~(2jx−k)\tilde\psi_{j,k}(x) = 2^{j/2}\tilde\psi(2^j x - k). The pair (ψ,ψ~)(\psi, \tilde\psi) is a biorthogonal wavelet pair if:

  1. the family {ψj,k:j,k∈ℤ}\set{\psi_{j,k} : j, k \in \Z} is a Riesz basis of L2(ℝ)L^2(\R);
  2. the family {ψ~j,k:j,k∈ℤ}\set{\tilde\psi_{j,k} : j, k \in \Z} is a Riesz basis of L2(ℝ)L^2(\R);
  3. ⟨ψj,k,ψ~j′,k′⟩=1\ip{\psi_{j,k}}{\tilde\psi_{j',k'}} = 1 if (j,k)=(j′,k′)(j,k) = (j',k') and 00 otherwise.

The function ψ~\tilde\psi is called the dual wavelet of ψ\psi.

Remarks

Under these conditions every f∈L2(ℝ)f \in L^2(\R) has the expansions f=∑j,k∈ℤ⟨f,ψ~j,k⟩ ψj,k=∑j,k∈ℤ⟨f,ψj,k⟩ ψ~j,k,f = \sum_{j,k \in \Z} \ip{f}{\tilde\psi_{j,k}} \, \psi_{j,k} = \sum_{j,k \in \Z} \ip{f}{\psi_{j,k}} \, \tilde\psi_{j,k}, with convergence in L2(ℝ)L^2(\R).

Example: if ψ\psi is an orthonormal wavelet, such as the Haar wavelet, then (ψ,ψ)(\psi, \psi) is a biorthogonal pair. Each family is an orthonormal basis, hence a Riesz basis, and clause 3 is orthonormality.

Non-example: take ψ\psi the Haar wavelet and ψ~=2ψ\tilde\psi = 2\psi. Both families are Riesz bases, but ⟨ψ0,0,ψ~0,0⟩=2\ip{\psi_{0,0}}{\tilde\psi_{0,0}} = 2, so clause 3 fails.

In practice biorthogonal pairs come from two multiresolution analyses with dual scaling functions φ\varphi and φ~\tilde\varphi, and the transform is computed with two pairs of finite filters. The Cohen–Daubechies–Feauveau family contains the 5/3 and 9/7 biorthogonal wavelets used in JPEG 2000.

What this page needs for W1

  • an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)
  • a source with a locator (0 of 1)

The writing levels say how complete the text of a page is. They do not measure its truth.
