Definition
Let and , and let be pairwise distinct. An incidence matrix is an matrix , with and . Its entries are or , and exactly of them are equal to . Given real numbers for the pairs with , the Birkhoff interpolation problem asks for a polynomial with real coefficients such that:
- or ;
- for every pair with , where is the -th derivative.
The pair of and the nodes is poised if this problem has exactly one solution for every choice of the data .
Remarks
The conditions form a square linear system in the coefficients of , so poisedness means that its determinant is nonzero. If in each row of the ones form an initial block , the problem is Hermite interpolation, which is always poised. If moreover each row has a single one in column , it is polynomial interpolation.
Example: nodes , , , conditions and . For these give and , so the problem is poised.
Non-example: nodes , , conditions , , . For the system has the matrix with rows , , , whose determinant is . For instance is a nonzero solution with zero data, so the problem is not poised.
