Definition
Let be a Noetherian scheme and let be a closed subscheme with ideal sheaf . The blow-up of along is the scheme given by the relative Proj construction, with , together with its projection . The closed subscheme is the exceptional divisor, and is the centre of the blow-up.
Remarks
The ideal sheaf of is invertible, so is an effective Cartier divisor. The morphism is projective, and it is an isomorphism over . It has a universal property: every morphism such that is invertible factors uniquely through .
Example: the blow-up of at the origin, with , is the closed subvariety Over a point the condition forces , so is bijective there. Over the origin every is allowed, so , the projective line of directions through the origin.
Non-example: the projection is not the blow-up at the origin. It fails to be an isomorphism over , since every fibre is a whole .
Blowing up an effective Cartier divisor changes nothing: is then an isomorphism.
