Braided monoidal category
Builds on Monoidal categoryNatural transformation
Definition
Let be a monoidal category. A braiding on is a natural isomorphism with components , natural in and . It must satisfy the two hexagon identities for all objects :
- as morphisms ;
- as morphisms .
A braided monoidal category is a monoidal category with a braiding.
Remarks
Example: with the usual tensor product and . On both sides of the first hexagon give , and both sides of the second hexagon send to . Non-example: on with , the natural isomorphism is not a braiding. In each hexagon the left side contains one copy of and the right side two, so for nonzero spaces the two sides differ by the sign . The first hexagon says that moving past in one step equals moving it past and then past . The second says the same for moving past .
