Definition
Let be a smooth projective algebraic curve of genus over an algebraically closed field. For an integer , let be the set of isomorphism classes of line bundles of degree on . It is a subset of the Picard group of . For integers and :
- The Brill–Noether locus is , the set of line bundles of degree whose complete linear system has dimension at least .
- The Brill–Noether number is .
Brill–Noether theory is the study of the loci , in particular of when they are nonempty and of their dimension.
Remarks
The locus is a closed subvariety of , which is a copy of the Jacobian, of dimension . The number is the expected dimension of : it is minus the number of conditions that the existence of sections imposes, as predicted by Riemann–Roch. Existence theorem (Kempf, Kleiman–Laksov): if , then is nonempty for every curve . Griffiths–Harris theorem: for a general curve of genus , is empty if , and it has dimension if . Example: for , , , one gets , so a general curve of genus has no pencil of degree and is not hyperelliptic. Example: for and , one gets , and is the image of the -fold symmetric product of , of dimension .
