Definition
Let be an irrational number. Let , for , be the convergents of the continued fraction expansion of , with . The number is a Brjuno number if
Remarks
Example: for the golden mean , the are Fibonacci numbers. They satisfy and for . So the terms are at most , which decay geometrically, and the series converges. Non-example: choose partial quotients inductively with . Then , so each term is at least and the series diverges. Every Diophantine number, and hence almost every real number, is a Brjuno number. Brjuno proved that if is a Brjuno number, every germ is linearizable at . Yoccoz proved that for the quadratic germ the condition is also necessary. So has a Siegel disc around exactly when is a Brjuno number.
