Butterfly catastrophe
Example
The butterfly catastrophe is the family of functions of one variable with four control parameters . For the function is , whose critical point at is degenerate: the first five derivatives vanish there.
The derivative has degree , so has at most five critical points. Since as , nondegenerate critical points alternate minimum, maximum, minimum, maximum, minimum. So can have three local minima, which the fold, cusp and swallowtail cannot.
Check with , , , . Then and The critical points are . The sign of is negative on and changes at each of the five simple roots. So are local minima and are local maxima. The region of parameters with three minima is the "pocket" of the butterfly, bounded by the bifurcation set.

What this page needs for W1
- an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)
- a source with a locator (0 of 1)
The writing levels say how complete the text of a page is. They do not measure its truth.
