Butterfly effect
Definition
Let be a metric space and let be a continuous map, with iterates . The map has sensitive dependence on initial conditions, the butterfly effect, if there is a constant with the following property. For every and every , there are a point with and an integer with .
Remarks
The constant is the same for all ; the point and the time depend on and . For a flow one asks instead for a time with . Sensitive dependence is one of the conditions in Devaney's definition of chaos.
Example: the doubling map on the circle , with the distance to the nearest integer of the difference. Take . Given and , choose with and let . Then , and , so .
Non-example: the rotation on is an isometry, so for all . Points closer than stay closer than forever, so no works.
