Cancellation property
Builds on Binary operation
Definition
Let be a binary operation on a set and let .
- The element is left cancellable if implies , for all .
- The element is right cancellable if implies , for all .
- The element is cancellable if it is both left and right cancellable.
The pair is left cancellative, right cancellative or cancellative if every element of is left cancellable, right cancellable or cancellable.
Remarks
Example: is cancellative, because gives by comparing the numbers, and is commutative.
Non-example: is not cancellative, because with , so is not left cancellable.
An element is left cancellable if and only if the map is injective. On a set with at least two elements, the operation is left cancellative but not right cancellative.
