Canonical height

Summary

Let ϕ\phi be a morphism of degree d≥2d \ge 2 of projective space over a number field. Its canonical height is the height function adapted to ϕ\phi: it multiplies by exactly dd under ϕ\phi. It differs from the naive Weil height by a bounded amount, and it vanishes exactly at the preperiodic points of ϕ\phi. For the multiplication maps on an elliptic curve the same construction gives the Néron–Tate height, a quadratic form on the group of rational points. Canonical heights are a basic tool of arithmetic dynamics.

What this page needs for W1

  • an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)
  • a source with a locator (0 of 1)

The writing levels say how complete the text of a page is. They do not measure its truth.
