Definition
Let be an algebraic closure of , let and let be the absolute logarithmic height on projective space. Let be a morphism of degree defined over , and write for its -fold composition. The canonical height of is the function given by
Remarks
The limit exists because uniformly in , so the sequence is Cauchy, by a telescoping argument. It has these properties, due to Call and Silverman:
- ;
- is bounded on ;
- , with equality exactly when is preperiodic for .
Property 3 uses Northcott's theorem: a point of canonical height has an orbit of bounded height inside a fixed number field, and such an orbit is finite.
Example: for on , exactly, so . Its zeros are , and the roots of unity, which are exactly the preperiodic points of .
Non-example: for the naive height is not the canonical height of . It fails property 1: , but .
For an elliptic curve over a number field, the Lattès map that describes doubling on -coordinates has degree . Its canonical height, up to a normalizing factor, is the Néron–Tate height of .
