Category of elements
Definition
Let be a category and let be a functor to the category of sets. The category of elements , also written , is defined as follows:
- its objects are the pairs with an object of and ;
- a morphism is a morphism of with ;
- composition and identities are those of .
Remarks
Composition is well defined because . It is the comma category , where is a one-point set, and the map is a projection functor . Example: let be a group seen as a category with one object, and let be a set with a group action of . Then has the elements of as objects and a morphism for each with ; it is the action groupoid. Non-example: if , then is not a morphism from to in , although it is a morphism of . For a contravariant functor , the same construction is usually written with morphisms such that .
