Cauchy's exponential equation

Builds on Functional equationFunction

Definition

Cauchy's exponential equation is the functional equation f(x+y)=f(x) f(y)for all x,y∈ℝ,f(x + y) = f(x)\, f(y) \quad \text{for all } x, y \in \R, for an unknown function f ⁣:ℝ→ℝf \colon \R \to \R. A solution is a function ff that satisfies this identity for all real xx and yy.

Remarks

Example: f(x)=e3xf(x) = e^{3x} is a solution, since e3(x+y)=e3xe3ye^{3(x + y)} = e^{3x} e^{3y}. Non-example: f(x)=1+xf(x) = 1 + x is not a solution, since f(1+1)=3f(1 + 1) = 3 while f(1)f(1)=4f(1) f(1) = 4. Every solution satisfies f(x)=f(x/2)2≥0f(x) = f(x/2)^2 \ge 0. If f(x0)=0f(x_0) = 0 for one x0x_0, then f(x)=f(x−x0)f(x0)=0f(x) = f(x - x_0) f(x_0) = 0 for all xx. Otherwise f>0f > 0 and ln⁡f\ln f is an additive function, so the solutions are f=0f = 0 and f=eAf = e^{A} with AA additive. The continuous solutions are f=0f = 0 and f(x)=axf(x) = a^x with a>0a > 0.

The writing levels say how complete the text of a page is. They do not measure its truth.
