Cauchy's power equation

Builds on Functional equationFunction

Definition

Cauchy's power equation is the functional equation f(xy)=f(x) f(y)for all x,y>0,f(xy) = f(x)\, f(y) \quad \text{for all } x, y > 0, for an unknown function f ⁣:(0,∞)→ℝf \colon (0, \infty) \to \R. A solution is a function ff that satisfies this identity for all positive xx and yy.

Remarks

Example: f(x)=xf(x) = \sqrt{x} is a solution, since xy=xy\sqrt{xy} = \sqrt{x} \sqrt{y}. Non-example: f(x)=2xf(x) = 2x is not a solution, since f(1⋅1)=2f(1 \cdot 1) = 2 while f(1)f(1)=4f(1) f(1) = 4. The substitution x=esx = e^s, y=ety = e^t turns the equation into Cauchy's exponential equation for g(s)=f(es)g(s) = f(e^s). So the continuous solutions are f=0f = 0 and f(x)=xcf(x) = x^c with c∈ℝc \in \R.

  • an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)
  • a source with a locator (0 of 1)

The writing levels say how complete the text of a page is. They do not measure its truth.
