Definition
Let be a smooth manifold of dimension . Let be its cotangent bundle with the canonical symplectic form, and let be a Lagrangian submanifold. Let be the set of Lagrangian singularities of , the points where the differential of has rank less than . The caustic of is the set of critical values of the Lagrangian map .
Remarks
Example: and . The map is , singular only at , so and . Over lie two points of , and over none, so the number of preimages jumps at the caustic.
Non-example: if is the graph of for a smooth function on , then is a diffeomorphism, is empty, and the caustic is empty.
In geometric optics, is space and is the set of positions and directions of the rays of a beam. Then is the envelope of the family of rays, where the rays focus. If is given locally by a generating family , the caustic is the bifurcation set of the family with as control.
