Cayley–Klein metric
Builds on Projective spaceQuadricCross-ratio
Definition
Let and let be a nondegenerate quadric in the real projective space , called the absolute. Let be a nonzero real or imaginary constant. Let and be two distinct points not on such that the line is not tangent to . Let and be the two points where the line meets , taken in the complexification when they are not real. The Cayley–Klein distance of and is where is the cross-ratio of the four points on the line. Also .
Remarks
Hyperbolic case: let be an ellipsoid and let and lie inside it. Then and are real. In an affine chart with the points in the order on the line, take and the cross-ratio . This ratio is greater than , so , and as tends to . This is the Beltrami–Klein model of hyperbolic space with curvature .
Elliptic case: if has no real points, such as , then and are complex conjugate, and an imaginary constant gives the real distance of elliptic geometry.
Non-example: a degenerate quadric, such as a double plane, does not fit the definition, because a line meets it in one point only. Euclidean geometry appears only as a limit of the nondegenerate cases.
Conventions for the order in the cross-ratio differ between sources; they change the sign of the logarithm, not the geometry.
