Cellular automaton
Builds on Shift space
Definition
Let be a finite set of states and let . A configuration is an element of . Let be a finite set, called the neighbourhood, and let be a map, called the local rule. The cellular automaton with neighbourhood and local rule is the map given by
Remarks
Example: rule 90 has , , and . So , and the value at depends only on the sites , as required. Non-example: the map on is not a cellular automaton. The value at reads the site , so no fixed finite set of offsets works for all . Equivalently, it does not commute with the shift, which the Curtis–Hedlund–Lyndon theorem requires. The dynamics is the iteration of , with the configuration at time . In one dimension with and , the local rules are the elementary cellular automata, numbered by Wolfram's convention.
