Censoring
Builds on Random variableIndependence of two random variables
Definition
Let be a real random variable of interest. An observation of is censored if it reveals only that lies in a set, rather than the value of . The standard types are:
- Right censoring: for a censoring time , one observes and ; when one only learns .
- Left censoring: one only learns for a known .
- Interval censoring: one only learns for known .
Remarks
Right censoring is called independent when and are independent; most standard methods of survival analysis assume this or a closely related non-informative censoring condition.
Example: a patient enters a study at month , the study closes at month , and the patient has had no relapse by then. With the relapse time and , the record is , , which says exactly that .
Non-example: truncation is different. Suppose a study only includes people whose event time exceeds . Then those with never appear in the data, so nothing about them is observed, not even a bound.

What this page needs for W1
- an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)
- a source with a locator (0 of 1)
The writing levels say how complete the text of a page is. They do not measure its truth.
