Definition

Let KK be a field. A central simple algebra over KK is an associative algebra AA over KK with these three properties:

  1. AA is finite-dimensional as a vector space over KK.
  2. AA is a simple ring: A≠0A \ne 0 and its only two-sided ideals are 00 and AA.
  3. The center of AA is K⋅1K \cdot 1.

Remarks

Example: Mn(K)M_n(K) is a central simple algebra over KK for n≥1n \ge 1. It has dimension n2n^2, its only two-sided ideals are 00 and itself, and a matrix that commutes with all matrix units EijE_{ij} is a scalar matrix.

Non-example: ℂ\C as an algebra over ℝ\R is finite-dimensional and simple, but its center is ℂ≠ℝ\C \ne \R, so clause 3 fails. Non-example: K×KK \times K is commutative of dimension 22 and has the ideal K×0K \times 0, so clause 2 fails.

Hamilton's quaternions ℍ\mathbb{H} are a central simple algebra over ℝ\R of dimension 44. The dimension of a central simple algebra is always a square n2n^2, and nn is its degree. If AA and BB are central simple over KK, so is A⊗KBA \otimes_K B; and A⊗KAop≅Mn2(K)A \otimes_K A^{\mathrm{op}} \cong M_{n^2}(K) when dim⁡KA=n2\dim_K A = n^2.
