Definition
Let be a -periodic function that is integrable on , with Fourier coefficients , . For let be the partial sums of its Fourier series. For , the -th Cesàro mean (or Fejér mean) of the Fourier series of is
Remarks
Counting how often each frequency occurs in gives where is the Fejér kernel. So is a trigonometric polynomial of degree at most . It is the Cesàro mean of order of the sequence .
Example: for , and for . So , which tends to .
Non-example: the Abel–Poisson means also average the Fourier series, but with the weights instead of ; they are a different method, the Abel–Poisson summation.
