Definition
Let be an additive category, let and be chain complexes in , and let be chain maps. A chain homotopy from to is a family of morphisms , one for each integer , such that The maps and are chain homotopic, written , if such a family exists.
Remarks
Chain homotopy is an equivalence relation compatible with composition. A chain map is a chain homotopy equivalence if there is a chain map with and . A complex is contractible if its identity is chain homotopic to the zero map. In an abelian category, chain homotopic maps induce the same morphisms on homology: a cycle is sent by to , which is a boundary.
Example: let have , , and otherwise; let be the identity and . Take and all other . In degree , ; in degree , .
Non-example: let be in degree and elsewhere. In degree , the map lands in and lands in , so , while . So the identity is not chain homotopic to ; indeed it induces the identity of .
