Chebyshev polynomials of the second kind

Builds on Polynomial ring

Definition

The Chebyshev polynomials of the second kind are the polynomials Un∈ℤ[x]U_n \in \Z[x], n≥0n \ge 0, in the polynomial ring ℤ[x]\Z[x] given by U0=1,U1=2x,Un+1=2x Un−Un−1(n≥1).U_0 = 1, \qquad U_1 = 2x, \qquad U_{n+1} = 2x \, U_n - U_{n-1} \quad (n \ge 1).

Remarks

Equivalently, UnU_n is the unique polynomial with Un(cos⁡θ)sin⁡θ=sin⁡((n+1)θ)U_n(\cos \theta) \sin \theta = \sin((n + 1)\theta) for all real θ\theta. Example: U2=2x⋅2x−1=4x2−1U_2 = 2x \cdot 2x - 1 = 4x^2 - 1, and indeed sin⁡(3θ)=sin⁡θ (3−4sin⁡2θ)=sin⁡θ (4cos⁡2θ−1)\sin(3\theta) = \sin \theta \, (3 - 4 \sin^2 \theta) = \sin \theta \, (4 \cos^2 \theta - 1). Non-example: the Chebyshev polynomials of the first kind TnT_n satisfy the same recurrence but start with T1=xT_1 = x, so they fail the clause U1=2xU_1 = 2x. The polynomial UnU_n has degree nn, leading coefficient 2n2^n, and roots cos⁡kπn+1\cos \frac{k\pi}{n + 1} for k=1,…,nk = 1, \dots, n. They are orthogonal: ∫−11Um(x)Un(x)1−x2 dx=π2δmn\int_{-1}^{1} U_m(x) U_n(x) \sqrt{1 - x^2} \, dx = \frac{\pi}{2} \delta_{mn}. They are linked to the first kind by Tn′=n Un−1T_n' = n \, U_{n-1} for n≥1n \ge 1.

  • an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)

The writing levels say how complete the text of a page is. They do not measure its truth.
