Definition
Let be a compact Hausdorff space with at least points, and let be continuous functions. The family is a Chebyshev system (or Haar system) on if the following holds. Every linear combination with has at most zeros in . An -dimensional subspace of is a Haar subspace if it has a basis that is a Chebyshev system.
Remarks
Equivalently, the determinant is nonzero for all distinct . Equivalently, for all distinct and all there is exactly one combination with for all .
Example: on . A nonzero polynomial of degree at most has at most roots.
Non-example: on , with . The combination is nonzero but has two zeros, , more than .
The trigonometric polynomials of degree at most form a Haar subspace of dimension on the circle : a nonzero one has at most zeros in a period.
