Definition

Let XX be a complex manifold, let E→XE \to X be a holomorphic vector bundle, and let hh be a Hermitian metric on EE. Let ∂ˉE\bar\partial_E be the ∂ˉ\bar\partial-operator of EE, which sends a smooth section to an EE-valued (0,1)(0,1)-form and kills exactly the holomorphic sections. The Chern connection of (E,h)(E, h) is the connection ∇\nabla on EE such that:

  1. ∇\nabla is compatible with hh: d h(s,t)=h(∇s,t)+h(s,∇t)d\, h(s, t) = h(\nabla s, t) + h(s, \nabla t) for all smooth sections s,ts, t.
  2. The (0,1)(0,1)-part of ∇\nabla is ∂ˉE\bar\partial_E: ∇0,1=∂ˉE\nabla^{0,1} = \bar\partial_E.

Such a connection exists and is unique.

Remarks

Write ∇=∇1,0+∇0,1\nabla = \nabla^{1,0} + \nabla^{0,1} for the splitting by type. In a local holomorphic frame e1,…,ere_1, \dots, e_r, let HH be the matrix with entries Hij=h(ej,ei)H_{ij} = h(e_j, e_i). Then the connection matrix is θ=H−1∂H\theta = H^{-1} \partial H in a suitable index convention, and the curvature is Θ=∂ˉθ\Theta = \bar\partial \theta, a (1,1)(1,1)-form with values in End⁡E\operatorname{End} E.

Example: let LL be a holomorphic line bundle with local holomorphic frame ee, and let H=h(e,e)>0H = h(e, e) > 0. Put ∇e=∂log⁡H⊗e\nabla e = \partial \log H \otimes e. Clause 2 holds because ∂ˉEe=0\bar\partial_E e = 0 and ∂log⁡H\partial \log H has type (1,0)(1,0). Clause 1 holds because h(∇e,e)+h(e,∇e)=(∂log⁡H+∂ˉlog⁡H)H=dHh(\nabla e, e) + h(e, \nabla e) = (\partial \log H + \bar\partial \log H) H = dH. The curvature is Θ=d∂log⁡H=−∂∂ˉlog⁡H\Theta = d \partial \log H = -\partial \bar\partial \log H.

Non-example: on the trivial line bundle over ℂ\C with the standard metric, let ∇s=ds+is dx\nabla s = ds + i s\, dx, where x=Re⁡zx = \operatorname{Re} z. Since i dxi\, dx is purely imaginary, clause 1 holds. But i dx=i2(dz+dzˉ)i\, dx = \tfrac{i}{2}(dz + d\bar z), so ∇0,1=∂ˉ+i2dzˉ≠∂ˉ\nabla^{0,1} = \bar\partial + \tfrac{i}{2} d\bar z \ne \bar\partial, and clause 2 fails.
