Definition
Let be an algebraic variety over a field and let be an integer. Let be the group of -dimensional algebraic cycles on and its subgroup of cycles rationally equivalent to . The Chow group of -cycles on is the quotient If is equidimensional of dimension , the Chow group of codimension cycles is .
Remarks
Example: for over a field and , , generated by the class of a linear subspace of dimension . A subvariety of dimension and degree has class times the generator. For and proper, the degree map is well defined on . Non-example: replacing rational equivalence by algebraic equivalence gives a different group. For an elliptic curve over an algebraically closed field , , while modulo algebraic equivalence the -cycles form only , detected by the degree. For a smooth variety, is isomorphic to the Picard group of .
