Definition

Let RR be a ring with identity. An element c∈Rc \in R is regular if cc is not a zero divisor on either side: ca=0c a = 0 or ac=0a c = 0 implies a=0a = 0. Let CC be the set of regular elements of RR. A right classical ring of quotients of RR is a ring QQ containing RR as a subring such that:

  1. every regular element of RR is a unit of QQ;
  2. every element of QQ has the form ac−1a c^{-1} with a∈Ra \in R and c∈Cc \in C.

The left classical ring of quotients is defined in the same way with elements c−1ac^{-1} a. If RR has a right and a left classical ring of quotients, they coincide, and this ring is the classical ring of quotients of RR.

Remarks

The right classical ring of quotients is the Ore localization RC−1R C^{-1}. It exists if and only if CC satisfies the right Ore condition; reversibility holds automatically, since elements of CC are not zero divisors. It is then unique up to an isomorphism that fixes RR.

Example: for a commutative integral domain RR, the set CC is R∖{0}R \setminus \set{0}, and the classical ring of quotients is the field of fractions. For R=ℤR = \Z it is ℚ\Q: each nonzero integer is invertible in ℚ\Q, and each rational number is ac−1a c^{-1} with a,c∈ℤa, c \in \Z and c≠0c \ne 0.

Non-example: the free algebra k⟨x,y⟩k\langle x, y \rangle over a field kk is a domain, so CC consists of all nonzero elements. It has no right classical ring of quotients, because CC fails the right Ore condition: xC∩yR=∅x C \cap y R = \emptyset.

A ring RR with a right classical ring of quotients QQ is called a right order in QQ. A right Ore domain has a right classical ring of quotients that is a division ring.

What this page needs for W1

  • an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)
  • a source with a locator (0 of 1)

The writing levels say how complete the text of a page is. They do not measure its truth.
