Clifford module
Builds on Clifford algebraQuadratic form
Definition
Let be a finite-dimensional real vector space with a quadratic form . Let be the Clifford algebra of , with the convention that for . Let be or . A Clifford module over is a -vector space together with a homomorphism of real algebras that sends to .
Remarks
By the universal property of the Clifford algebra, giving is the same as giving a linear map with Authors who use the convention get the same theory with replaced by . A Clifford module is irreducible if it has no proper nonzero invariant subspace; when is nondegenerate, every finite-dimensional Clifford module is a direct sum of irreducible ones.
Example: let with , let as a real vector space and let be multiplication by . Then , so is a Clifford module, and in fact .
Non-example: with the same and , let and . Then , so this is not a Clifford module. In fact no real vector space of dimension is a Clifford module here, since no real number squares to .
