Definition
Let be a monoidal category. is closed (more precisely, right closed) if for every object the functor has a right adjoint, written . Equivalently, for all objects there is a bijection natural in and . The object is called the internal hom.
Remarks
If also every functor has a right adjoint, is called biclosed; for a symmetric monoidal category the two notions agree. Example: with the space of linear maps ; a linear map corresponds to . Non-example: with the disjoint union as tensor product and the empty set as unit is monoidal but not closed. A left adjoint preserves the initial object, but is not empty when is nonempty, so has no right adjoint. A Cartesian closed category is a closed monoidal category whose tensor product is the categorical product.
