Cobweb plot
Builds on Iterated functionFixed point
Definition
Let be an interval, let be a map, and let . Let for , where is the -th iterate of , so that . Consider the points and for . The cobweb plot of the orbit of is the polygonal path . It is drawn together with the graph of and the diagonal .
Remarks
The points lie on the graph of and the points lie on the diagonal. So the path alternates vertical segments to the graph and horizontal segments to the diagonal. A fixed point of is a point where the graph meets the diagonal, and the path starting at stays at .
Example: let on and . The orbit is , with for . The cobweb path goes from up to , across to , up to , and so on, a staircase that climbs to the fixed point .
Non-example: the plot of the points against the time is a time series plot. It is not a cobweb plot, because it does not use the graph of and the diagonal.
