Codimension of a singularity
Definition
Let be the ring of germs at of smooth functions , and let be its maximal ideal of germs vanishing at . Let have a critical point at , and let be the ideal generated by . The codimension of is which may be infinite.
Remarks
Example: for on , and has basis the classes of and , so . For a nondegenerate critical point , so the codimension is . Non-example: the definition needs a critical point at ; for one has , and a regular point is not given a codimension in this sense. When it is finite, . For a holomorphic germ, the same quotient of the ring of convergent power series has dimension the Milnor number . It equals the least number of parameters of a versal unfolding of , not counting an additive constant. Conventions vary between authors; some count the additive constant as well and use .

What this page needs for W1
- an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)
- a source with a locator (0 of 1)
The writing levels say how complete the text of a page is. They do not measure its truth.
