Definition
Let be a category and let be two morphisms of . A coequalizer of and is an object with a morphism such that:
- ;
- for every object and every morphism with , there is exactly one morphism with .
Remarks
A coequalizer is the colimit of the diagram formed by and , and it is an equalizer in the opposite category. It is an epimorphism, by the dual of the argument for equalizers.
Example: in the category of sets, let be the smallest equivalence relation on with for all , let and let be the quotient map. Clause 1 holds by construction. If , the relation "" is an equivalence relation containing all pairs , so it contains , and is well defined; it is unique because is surjective. In the category of abelian groups the coequalizer of and is with the quotient map.
Non-example: for , , and , the constant map satisfies clause 1 but not clause 2. The map with and has but does not factor through a one-point set.
