Definition

Let XX be a locally Noetherian scheme. A quasi-coherent sheaf ℱ\mathcal{F} on XX is coherent if XX has a cover by affine open sets U=Spec⁡AU = \operatorname{Spec} A with the following property. For each such UU, ℱ∣U≅M~\mathcal{F}|_U \cong \widetilde{M} for a finitely generated AA-module MM.

Remarks

On 𝔸k1=Spec⁡k[t]\mathbb{A}^1_k = \operatorname{Spec} k[t] over a field kk, the skyscraper sheaf M~\widetilde{M} with M=k[t]/(t)M = k[t]/(t) is coherent, since MM is generated by one element. On Spec⁡ℤ\operatorname{Spec} \Z, the sheaf ℚ~\widetilde{\Q} is quasi-coherent but not coherent. For it to be coherent, ℚ=ℚ~(Spec⁡ℤ)\Q = \widetilde{\Q}(\operatorname{Spec} \Z) would have to be a finitely generated ℤ\Z-module, and it is not. If ℱ\mathcal{F} is coherent on a locally Noetherian scheme, then ℱ(U)\mathcal{F}(U) is finitely generated over AA for every affine open U=Spec⁡AU = \operatorname{Spec} A. On a general ringed space, Serre's definition asks that ℱ\mathcal{F} is locally finitely generated and that every finitely generated subsheaf over an open set is locally finitely presented. On a locally Noetherian scheme the two definitions agree.
