Definition
Let be a ring with identity and let be a set of square matrices over , of possibly different sizes. A ring homomorphism is -inverting if for every the matrix , obtained by applying to each entry, is invertible over . The Cohn localization (or universal localization) of at is a ring with a -inverting homomorphism with this property. Every -inverting homomorphism factors as for exactly one ring homomorphism .
Remarks
exists for every and , and it is unique up to a unique isomorphism over . It can be built by adjoining, for each matrix , new generators forming a matrix , with the relations . The map need not be injective, and may be the zero ring. Example: let be commutative and let be the set of matrices with in a multiplicative set . A homomorphism is -inverting exactly when it sends each to a unit, so is the localization . More generally, for a right denominator set , that is, a multiplicative set satisfying the right Ore condition and right reversibility, is the Ore localization . Non-example: the identity map is not -inverting for , since is not a unit in ; the localization in this case is . For the free algebra over a field and the set of full matrices, is a division ring, the free field.
