Collineation
Builds on Projective geometryCollinear points
Definition
Let and be projective geometries, with point sets and . A collineation from to is a bijection with the following property. For all points of , the points are collinear exactly when are collinear. A collineation from to itself is a collineation of .
Remarks
Equivalently, is a bijection on points such that the image of every line is a line and every line of is such an image. The same definition applies to affine spaces and to other incidence structures whose lines are sets of points.
Example: every projective transformation of is a collineation. Check: the line through and is for the plane spanned by . The map sends it onto , again a line, and the inverse map comes from .
Non-example: in the Fano plane , whose lines are the sets of nonzero vectors of , swap and and fix all other points. The line goes to , which is not a line, because .
The collineations of form a group under composition, the collineation group of .
