Complementary error function

Builds on Error function

Definition

Let erf⁡\operatorname{erf} be the error function. The complementary error function is the function erfc⁡ ⁣:ℝ→ℝ\operatorname{erfc} \colon \R \to \R given by erfc⁡x=1−erf⁡x.\operatorname{erfc} x = 1 - \operatorname{erf} x.

Remarks

Since 2π∫0∞e−t2 dt=1\frac{2}{\sqrt{\pi}} \int_0^\infty e^{-t^2}\, dt = 1, the definition is equivalent to erfc⁡x=2π∫x∞e−t2 dt.\operatorname{erfc} x = \frac{2}{\sqrt{\pi}} \int_x^\infty e^{-t^2}\, dt.

Example: erfc⁡0=1\operatorname{erfc} 0 = 1, and erfc⁡(−x)=2−erfc⁡x\operatorname{erfc}(-x) = 2 - \operatorname{erfc} x because erf⁡\operatorname{erf} is odd.

Non-example: x↦1+erf⁡xx \mapsto 1 + \operatorname{erf} x is not erfc⁡\operatorname{erfc}; it tends to 22 rather than 00 as x→∞x \to \infty.

For large x>0x > 0, erfc⁡x∼e−x2xπ\operatorname{erfc} x \sim \frac{e^{-x^2}}{x\sqrt{\pi}}. The definition extends to complex zz by erfc⁡z=1−erf⁡z\operatorname{erfc} z = 1 - \operatorname{erf} z, which is an entire function. The scaled function ex2erfc⁡xe^{x^2} \operatorname{erfc} x is often used in numerical work.
