Definition

Let (P,≀)(P, \le) be a partially ordered set and let π’ž\mathcal{C} be a class of subsets of PP. The poset PP is complete for π’ž\mathcal{C}, or has all π’ž\mathcal{C}-joins, if every Sβˆˆπ’žS \in \mathcal{C} has a supremum in PP. Dually, PP has all π’ž\mathcal{C}-meets if every Sβˆˆπ’žS \in \mathcal{C} has an infimum in PP. The standard choices of π’ž\mathcal{C} are:

  1. all subsets, giving a complete lattice;
  2. all finite nonempty subsets, giving a join-semilattice, and with meets as well, a lattice;
  3. all nonempty subsets with an upper bound, giving (with the dual condition on lattices) a conditionally complete lattice;
  4. all directed subsets, giving a directed-complete partial order;
  5. all chains, giving a chain-complete poset.

Remarks

Example: the power set of a set is complete for every class π’ž\mathcal{C}, since unions always exist. Non-example: β„•\N with its usual order has all finite nonempty joins but is not directed-complete, because β„•\N itself is directed and has no supremum. The empty set has a supremum if and only if PP has a least element. If PP has all joins of arbitrary subsets, it also has all meets, so in case 1 one condition suffices.

What this page needs for W1

  • an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)
  • a source with a locator (0 of 1)

The writing levels say how complete the text of a page is. They do not measure its truth.
