Definition
Let be the Riemann sphere or the complex plane , and let be a holomorphic map. For , the iterate is the -fold composition , with . The pair is a holomorphic discrete-time dynamical system. The orbit of a point is the sequence . Complex dynamics is the study of the orbits of such systems and of how they depend on the point and on the map .
Remarks
The standard cases are rational functions of degree at least , polynomials of degree at least , and transcendental entire functions . Example: with is a polynomial, hence holomorphic on , so is a holomorphic dynamical system. Non-example: is not holomorphic, since for , so its iteration is not part of complex dynamics in this sense. Rational maps of degree are Möbius maps, whose dynamics is elementary, which is why the degree is usually taken to be at least .
