Complex powers of elliptic operators

Summary

Complex powers AsA^s, s∈ℂs \in \C, of a positive elliptic operator AA on a closed manifold generalise the powers λs\lambda^s of a positive number. Seeley showed that they are pseudo-differential operators of order msms, where mm is the order of AA, depending holomorphically on ss. Their traces define the spectral zeta function ζA(s)=tr⁡A−s\zeta_A(s) = \operatorname{tr} A^{-s}, which extends meromorphically to ℂ\C and is regular at s=0s = 0. This is the basis of zeta function regularization of determinants of Laplacians and of analytic torsion.

What this page needs for W1

  • an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)
  • a source with a locator (0 of 1)

The writing levels say how complete the text of a page is. They do not measure its truth.
