Definition

Let MM be a closed manifold of dimension nn with a smooth positive density, and let EE be a Hermitian vector bundle over MM. Let A ⁣:Γ(E)→Γ(E)A \colon \Gamma(E) \to \Gamma(E) be an elliptic operator of order m>0m > 0 that is formally self-adjoint and positive: ∫M⟨Au,u⟩>0\int_M \ip{Au}{u} > 0 for every nonzero u∈Γ(E)u \in \Gamma(E). Then L2(E)L^2(E) has an orthonormal basis (φj)j≥1(\varphi_j)_{j \ge 1} of smooth eigensections, Aφj=λjφjA \varphi_j = \lambda_j \varphi_j, whose eigenvalues satisfy 0<λ1≤λ2≤⋯0 < \lambda_1 \le \lambda_2 \le \cdots and λj→∞\lambda_j \to \infty. For s∈ℂs \in \C, the complex power AsA^s is the operator Asu=∑j≥1λjs ⟨u,φj⟩ φj,u∈Γ(E),A^s u = \sum_{j \ge 1} \lambda_j^{s} \, \ip{u}{\varphi_j} \, \varphi_j, \qquad u \in \Gamma(E), where λjs=eslog⁡λj\lambda_j^s = e^{s \log \lambda_j} with the real logarithm.

Remarks

The powers satisfy AsAt=As+tA^s A^t = A^{s+t}, A0=id⁡A^0 = \id and A1=AA^1 = A, and A−1A^{-1} is the inverse of AA. Seeley proved that AsA^s is a classical pseudo-differential operator of order msms. For Re⁡s>n/m\operatorname{Re} s > n/m, the operator A−sA^{-s} is trace class, and the spectral zeta function ζA(s)=tr⁡A−s=∑j≥1λj−s\zeta_A(s) = \operatorname{tr} A^{-s} = \sum_{j \ge 1} \lambda_j^{-s} is holomorphic there. It extends to a meromorphic function on ℂ\C with at most simple poles, and it is holomorphic at s=0s = 0. This gives the zeta-regularized determinant det⁡A=e−ζA′(0)\det A = e^{-\zeta_A'(0)}. More generally, Seeley defined AsA^s by a contour integral of λs(A−λ)−1\lambda^s (A - \lambda)^{-1} for elliptic AA whose principal symbol has no eigenvalues on some ray from 00, without assuming self-adjointness.

Example: on the circle S1=ℝ/2πℤS^1 = \R / 2\pi\Z with dxdx, let A=1−d2/dx2A = 1 - d^2/dx^2, which is elliptic of order 22 and positive. Its eigensections are eikx/2πe^{ikx}/\sqrt{2\pi}, k∈ℤk \in \Z, with eigenvalues 1+k21 + k^2, so A−seikx=(1+k2)−seikxA^{-s} e^{ikx} = (1 + k^2)^{-s} e^{ikx}. Then ζA(s)=∑k∈ℤ(1+k2)−s\zeta_A(s) = \sum_{k \in \Z} (1 + k^2)^{-s} converges for Re⁡s>12=nm\operatorname{Re} s > \frac{1}{2} = \frac{n}{m} with n=1n = 1 and m=2m = 2.

Non-example: the operator −d2/dx2-d^2/dx^2 on S1S^1 is elliptic and self-adjoint but not positive, since it kills the constants. The formula would need 0s0^s, which is not defined for all ss; one first restricts to the orthogonal complement of the kernel.
