Definition

A concrete category is a pair (๐’ž,U)(\mathcal{C}, U) where ๐’ž\mathcal{C} is a category and Uโ€‰โฃ:๐’žโ†’๐’๐ž๐ญU \colon \mathcal{C} \to \mathbf{Set} is a faithful functor to the category of sets and functions. The functor UU is the forgetful functor, and U(A)U(A) is the underlying set of AA. A category ๐’ž\mathcal{C} is concretizable if such a faithful functor exists.

Remarks

Example: the category of groups with the functor sending a group to its underlying set is concrete. Two homomorphisms Gโ†’HG \to H with the same underlying function are equal, so UU is faithful. Non-example: the pair (groups, PP), where PP sends every group to a one-point set, is not a concrete category. The homomorphisms xโ†ฆ0x \mapsto 0 and xโ†ฆxx \mapsto x of โ„ค\Z are different but have the same image under PP, so PP is not faithful. Every small category ๐’ž\mathcal{C} is concretizable. Send AA to the set of all morphisms with codomain AA, and fโ€‰โฃ:Aโ†’Bf \colon A \to B to the map gโ†ฆfโˆ˜gg \mapsto f \circ g. This functor is faithful, since ff is the image of 1A1_A.
