Definition

A concrete category is a pair (๐’ž,U)(\mathcal{C}, U) of a category ๐’ž\mathcal{C} and a faithful functor Uโ€‰โฃ:๐’žโ†’๐’๐ž๐ญU \colon \mathcal{C} \to \mathbf{Set}. Faithful means: for all morphisms f,gโ€‰โฃ:Aโ†’Bf, g \colon A \to B, U(f)=U(g)U(f) = U(g) implies f=gf = g. Let ฯƒ\sigma be an algebraic signature and KK a class of ฯƒ\sigma-algebras closed under isomorphism. Let ๐’ฆ\mathcal{K} be the category with the members of KK as objects and the homomorphisms between them as morphisms. The concrete category of algebras of KK is the pair (๐’ฆ,U)(\mathcal{K}, U), where UU is the forgetful functor.

Remarks

The functor UU is faithful because a homomorphism is determined by its underlying map.

Example: the category ๐†๐ซ๐ฉ\mathbf{Grp} of groups with its forgetful functor to ๐’๐ž๐ญ\mathbf{Set} is a concrete category of algebras.

Non-example: the category ๐†๐ซ๐ฉ\mathbf{Grp} with the functor that sends GG to the underlying set of its abelianization G/[G,G]G / [G, G] is not a concrete category, since this functor is not faithful. The two homomorphisms โ„คโ†’S3\Z \to S_3 that send 11 to the transpositions (1โ€‰2)(1\,2) and (1โ€‰3)(1\,3) are different, but both induce the map โ„คโ†’โ„ค/2โ„ค\Z \to \Z / 2\Z that sends 11 to the nontrivial element.

Not every category admits a faithful functor to ๐’๐ž๐ญ\mathbf{Set}: by a theorem of Freyd, the homotopy category of topological spaces does not.

What this page needs for W1

  • an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)
  • a source with a locator (0 of 1)

The writing levels say how complete the text of a page is. They do not measure its truth.
