Definition
Let be a variety of algebras. The variety is congruence distributive if, for every algebra in , the congruence lattice is a distributive lattice. That is, for all congruences of ,
Remarks
Example: the variety of lattices is congruence distributive. Every lattice has the majority term , which satisfies , and a variety with a majority term is congruence distributive. Non-example: the variety of groups is not congruence distributive. In the Klein four-group , every subgroup is normal, so is isomorphic to the lattice of subgroups. For three distinct subgroups of order , , while is the trivial subgroup. Every congruence-distributive variety is congruence modular.
