Definition

Let 𝐀\mathbf{A} be an algebra with universe AA and let R⊆A×AR \subseteq A \times A. The congruence generated by RR is Cg⁡(R)=⋂{θ:θ is a congruence on 𝐀 and R⊆θ}.\operatorname{Cg}(R) = \bigcap \set{\theta : \theta \text{ is a congruence on } \mathbf{A} \text{ and } R \subseteq \theta}. For a,b∈Aa, b \in A one writes Cg⁡(a,b)\operatorname{Cg}(a, b) for Cg⁡({(a,b)})\operatorname{Cg}(\set{(a, b)}), the principal congruence of aa and bb.

Remarks

The family in the intersection contains A×AA \times A, so it is nonempty. An intersection of congruences is a congruence, so Cg⁡(R)\operatorname{Cg}(R) is the least congruence containing RR.

A description from below: (a,b)∈Cg⁡(R)(a, b) \in \operatorname{Cg}(R) if and only if there are elements a=z0,z1,…,zn=ba = z_0, z_1, \dots, z_n = b with the following property. For each i<ni < n there are (ci,di)∈R(c_i, d_i) \in R and a unary polynomial operation pip_i with {zi,zi+1}={pi(ci),pi(di)}\set{z_i, z_{i+1}} = \set{p_i(c_i), p_i(d_i)}.

Example: in the group (ℤ,+,−,0)(\Z, +, -, 0), Cg⁡(0,6)\operatorname{Cg}(0, 6) is congruence modulo 66. Congruence modulo 66 contains (0,6)(0, 6), and every congruence θ\theta containing (0,6)(0, 6) contains (a,a+6k)(a, a + 6k) for all a,k∈ℤa, k \in \Z by compatibility with ++ and −-.

Non-example: the equivalence relation with classes {0,6}\set{0, 6} and singletons elsewhere contains (0,6)(0, 6) but is not Cg⁡(0,6)\operatorname{Cg}(0, 6). It is not a congruence, since 0+1=10 + 1 = 1 and 6+1=76 + 1 = 7 are not related.

What this page needs for W1

  • an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)
  • a source with a locator (0 of 1)

The writing levels say how complete the text of a page is. They do not measure its truth.
