Definition

Let XX be a locally compact metric space and let φ ⁣:ℝ×X→X\varphi \colon \R \times X \to X be a continuous flow. For a set N⊆XN \subseteq X, let Inv⁡(N)={x∈X:φt(x)∈N for all t∈ℝ}\operatorname{Inv}(N) = \set{x \in X : \varphi_t(x) \in N \text{ for all } t \in \R}, the largest invariant set in NN. A compact set NN is an isolating neighbourhood if Inv⁡(N)\operatorname{Inv}(N) lies in the interior of NN. An invariant set SS is isolated if S=Inv⁡(N)S = \operatorname{Inv}(N) for some isolating neighbourhood NN. An index pair for an isolated invariant set SS is a pair of compact sets L⊆N⊆XL \subseteq N \subseteq X such that:

  1. The closure of N∖LN \setminus L is an isolating neighbourhood with Inv⁡(N∖L‾)=S\operatorname{Inv}(\overline{N \setminus L}) = S.
  2. LL is positively invariant in NN: if x∈Lx \in L, t≥0t \ge 0 and φs(x)∈N\varphi_s(x) \in N for all s∈[0,t]s \in [0, t], then φt(x)∈L\varphi_t(x) \in L.
  3. LL is an exit set for NN: if x∈Nx \in N and φt(x)∉N\varphi_t(x) \notin N for some t>0t > 0, then there is s∈[0,t]s \in [0, t] with φs(x)∈L\varphi_s(x) \in L and φr(x)∈N\varphi_r(x) \in N for all r∈[0,s]r \in [0, s].

Every isolated invariant set has an index pair. The homotopy type of the pointed space (N/L,[L])(N/L, [L]) does not depend on the choice of index pair. This homotopy type is the Conley index h(S)h(S) of SS.

Remarks

Here N/LN/L is the quotient space that collapses LL to one point [L][L]; when L=∅L = \emptyset, one sets N/L=N⊔{∗}N/L = N \sqcup \set{\ast} with base point ∗\ast. Example: let 00 be a hyperbolic rest point in ℝn\R^n with an unstable subspace of dimension kk. In adapted coordinates take N=Dk×Dn−kN = D^k \times D^{n-k}, a product of closed balls, and the exit set L=∂Dk×Dn−kL = \partial D^k \times D^{n-k}. Then N/LN/L has the homotopy type of Dk/∂DkD^k / \partial D^k, the pointed sphere SkS^k; for an attracting point, k=0k = 0 and the index is S0S^0. Non-example: for the trivial flow φt(x)=x\varphi_t(x) = x on ℝ\R, the invariant set S={0}S = \set{0} is not isolated, since every compact NN satisfies Inv⁡(N)=N\operatorname{Inv}(N) = N, which is not contained in the interior of NN. Ważewski principle: the empty set has index the pointed one-point space, so if h(S)h(S) is not that homotopy type, then S≠∅S \neq \emptyset.

What this page needs for W1

  • an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)
  • a source with a locator (0 of 1)

The writing levels say how complete the text of a page is. They do not measure its truth.
