Definition
Let be a measure space with σ-finite, and let be a quasi-measure-preserving map, with iterates . The map is conservative if for every with there is an integer with
Remarks
Equivalently, has no wandering set of positive measure, where is wandering if the sets , , are pairwise disjoint. For a conservative , almost every point of each returns to infinitely often. The Hopf decomposition splits , up to null sets, into an invariant part on which is conservative and a part that is a union of wandering sets.
Example: every measure-preserving map of a finite measure space is conservative, by the Poincaré recurrence theorem. For instance, an irrational rotation of the circle with Lebesgue measure is conservative.
Non-example: the translation on with Lebesgue measure preserves the measure, but for one has , which is disjoint from for every . So for all , and is not conservative.

What this page needs for W1
- an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)
- a source with a locator (0 of 1)
The writing levels say how complete the text of a page is. They do not measure its truth.
